Mansion Beach: Block Island’s Best-Kept Secret

A secluded Block Island beach with white sand curves along turquoise water, bordered by multicolored cliffs under cloudy skies.

Ask a Block Island regular about their favorite beach, and they’ll probably hesitate before answering. That pause? They’re deciding whether to tell you about Mansion Beach.

It’s not that islanders are secretive (okay, maybe a little). It’s that Mansion Beach has this quality that feels personal. Like finding a quiet corner in a crowded room. And once you’ve been there, you get why people don’t exactly broadcast it.

But here’s the thing: you deserve to know about it too.

What Makes Mansion Beach Special

Mansion Beach sits on Block Island’s eastern shore, about halfway between Old Harbor and the Southeast Lighthouse. The name comes from the remains of an old estate that once stood on the bluffs above.

The beach itself is a crescent of soft sand backed by dramatic clay bluffs that glow golden in the afternoon light. The water is that clear, cold Atlantic blue that makes you forget you’re only a ferry ride from the mainland.

What sets it apart from Block Island’s other popular beaches? Space. Even on busy summer days, Mansion Beach never feels packed. The walk to get there filters out the casual beachgoers, leaving room to spread out.

The Mansion Ruins

Up on the bluffs, you can still find traces of the old mansion’s foundation. The Searles family built a grand estate here in the late 1800s, one of those Gilded Age summer “cottages” that was actually a sprawling mansion.

Time and erosion did their work. The mansion is long gone, but the history adds something to the place. Standing on that beach, looking up at the bluffs, you can almost imagine what it must have been like to wake up to this view every morning.

Block Island is full of these layers. Old shipwrecks, colonial history, Victorian grandeur all mixed together. The ruins above Mansion Beach are just one more story written into the landscape.

How to Get There

Getting to Mansion Beach takes a little effort, which is exactly why it stays uncrowded.

By bike or moped: Head south from Old Harbor on Spring Street, then turn left onto Mohegan Trail. Look for the small parking area and trailhead on your left after about a mile. Park and walk down the path to the beach.

On foot: It’s a solid 25 to 30 minute walk from Old Harbor. Doable, but you’ll appreciate having wheels, especially on a hot day.

The trail down to the beach is short but steep in places. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting sandy (you can leave them at the bottom if you want).

What to Bring

Mansion Beach is beautiful but basic. No snack bar. No lifeguard. No restrooms. That’s part of the appeal, but it means you need to come prepared.

  • Water and snacks: Seriously, bring more than you think you need
  • Sunscreen: No shade on the beach
  • A good book or nothing at all: No wifi, no distractions
  • Towel or blanket: The sand is soft, but a barrier is nice
  • Trash bag: Pack out what you pack in

The lack of amenities is a feature, not a bug. Mansion Beach is for people who want actual peace and quiet, not a party scene.

Best Time to Visit

Morning: The bluffs block the early sun, so it stays cooler longer. Good for avoiding crowds.

Afternoon: Full sun hits the beach and the bluffs turn that gorgeous golden color. This is when photographers show up.

Weekdays: Always better than weekends if you really want solitude.

Avoid going right after a storm. The waves can kick up and the path gets slippery.

Swimming Conditions

The water at Mansion Beach is generally calm, but remember: no lifeguard. You’re on your own out there.

The ocean floor slopes gradually, making it good for wading. On calm days, the visibility is excellent for snorkeling (bring your own gear).

Watch for currents, especially near the rocks at either end of the beach. If the water looks choppy, keep your swim short and close to shore.

Combine It With These Nearby Spots

Since you’re already in this part of the island, make a day of it:

Southeast Lighthouse: Just a short bike ride further south. Climb to the top for panoramic views.

Mohegan Bluffs: The famous clay cliffs and their beach are nearby. Totally different vibe but equally stunning.

Back to Ballard’s: After a quiet morning at Mansion Beach, contrast it with lunch at Ballard’s. Mudslide optional but recommended.

Why Locals Love It

Block Island has beaches for every mood. Want the scene? Hit Ballard’s beach. Want facilities and lifeguards? Fred Benson is your spot. Want drama? Mohegan Bluffs.

But when locals want to just be, they go to Mansion Beach. No crowds. No music. Just the sound of waves and gulls and maybe the occasional boat passing offshore.

It’s the kind of place where you can actually read a book without interruption. Where your phone stays in your bag because there’s nothing to post, just experience. Where an hour feels like three and that’s exactly the point.

Is it Block Island’s best beach? That depends what you’re looking for. But if you’re looking for what makes this island feel different from everywhere else, Mansion Beach might be the truest answer.

Just don’t tell everyone about it.
