Nestled at the base of towering 200-foot clay cliffs, the beach at Mohegan Bluffs is often regarded as one of the most beautiful spots on Block Island. While the rocky shore provides a secluded and scenic spot for swimming and surfing, it’s the breathtaking views that make the trek worth it. To reach the beach, you’ll descend a set of 141 wooden steps, but once you reach the sand, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and, on clear days, the distant Montauk Point on Long Island.
The steps leading down to the beach are easy to find—marked by a plaque at the bluff’s overlook, which commemorates the site’s historical significance. Mohegan Bluffs got its name from a battle in 1590, where members of the Mohegan tribe were driven off the cliffs by the Manisseans, the native inhabitants of Block Island. Today, this beach is also a popular stop on the Block Island Bicycle Tour, offering visitors a chance to enjoy one of Rhode Island’s most dramatic coastal landscapes.
